Bentonite, also referred to as Montmorillonite, is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. Bentonite can be used externally as a clay poultice, mud pack or in the bath and, in skin care recipes. A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color and anything bordering “pure white” is suspect. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining. Bentonite Clay is composed of aged volcanic ash. The name comes from the largest known deposit of Bentonite Clay located in Fort Benton, Wyoming.
For Face Masks: Using bowls, mix one (1) ounce (scoop) of clay powder to four (4) parts pure filtered water (spring water is good) Add water or clay to create a sour creme like consistency. let sit covered for a minimum of 30 minutes. Wash face and then use fingers or brush to coat face 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Leave on 5 min. (dry skin) to 20 min. (oily skin.) Wash off with warm water (in shower is easiest) and immediately use high quality natural facial moisturizer.
For Hair Masks: Section your hair into four sections using plastic clamps to separate your hair. Apply the clay to your hair as if it was a relaxer — expect you also apply it to your scalp. Let the clay sit on your hair for 20-25 minutes, but do not let it harden. (If it hardens, it will be harder to remove from your hair.) Rinse out the clay with warm water. Take care to ensure that all of the clay is removed from the hair.
